Our Mother's Day in Quarantine

May 10, 2020

We are a family who loves to celebrate, we practically celebrate everything. So for matriarch we had a tea party.

This year’s mother’s day, coincided with me and Jeff’s 7th anniversary, so I had to make smart choices on how to celebrate both without it feeling like we’re sharing two events in one day. I figured we’ll just do an anniversary salubong and do a mother’s day tea party on the afternoon of May 10th.

Why a tea party you might ask? Well, since we are in quarantine, we seldom get the chance to dress up, which we love to do, like we only wear jammies and workout clothes on a daily basis, unless we need to be in a semi formal attire for work/school related concalls, so we definitely need to flex our Sunday’s bests atleast for one day, and this be the day.

I thought of a theme where we can dress up, something that’s easy to do since I barely have time to set up, and something we’ve never done before, then it hit me, A TEA PARTY. We basically have everything we need already, we have a Hermes Tea Set, some Noritake plates, gold cutleries, faux flowers, and pastel linens. PERFECT!

As for food we wanted to stick with biscuits, wafers, bread and pastries, cuz tea party, also low key I missed baking so I did, but failed miserably. Thankfully we already have some pastries from SNR and biscuits from Rob Supermarket. For the drinks my sister made cold brew, and apple tea. My mom also helped out, it’s just in her nature to help out with chores.

For the decor I was going for a whimsical, preppy, and pastel ambiance. I used mismatching linens with a faux fur runner to have that whimsical - "messy pretty" effect (also known as "intentionally messy vibe"). Since our tea set was far from pastel, I added a lot of white and gold features to blend the colors into the tea set. I also laced the whole area with faux flowers to soften our normally rugged, bare wood, roofdeck.

DIY Pro Tip #1 Doing a pretty messy effect looks so easy but it's far from the truth, you don't want it too messy that it looks lazy, but you don't want it to look too perfect/neat that it loses it's vibe and potentially look even uglier. There are two techniques that you can take to do it. First is by using colors within the same family or hue and make it visually cohesive, visually things of the same color minimizes the messiness. The second one is to set it up along side something that is symmetric to make that juxtaposition of mess + order.

DIY Pro Tip #2 if you love throwing parties and having gorg decor, invest in some realistic looking fake flowers. Get those with rubber or pvc like material than fabric flowers as those lasts longer and often looks more realistic, also take note of the stems

DIY Pro Tip #3 fake white flowers are more likely to look realistic than colored ones, in any material, also they are the most versatile thus a more practical decor investment

We had light snacks as we sip our tea (in my case coffee) and ate pastries all afternoon, we talked about our lives and future stuff, we really didn’t have much to talk about besides those things because we’ve been together for 2 1/2 months so there’s nothing new really that we can bring to the table. But it was enjoyable nonetheless.

The doggos joined us as well, and came in their sunday’s best as well. Khaleesi and I matched blazers of course.

If you’re wondering where Jeff is, as I mentioned in a previous article, he is a frontliner, so he was asked to serve the people, much to our shock, at arround 12nn, which explains his absence, I have reserved some snacks and ice cream for him to eat when he gets home.
